Tires have a large effect to performance and fuel consumption for cars. Therefore, understand the parameters of the tires is a necessity for anyone using a car.
First we must know the basic parameters of a tire. For example: P215/65 R15 95H can be understood as follows:
First letter tells us types of car can be used. P - "Passenger": passenger car tire. There are also some other types, such as LT - "Light Truck": light truck tire, pickup tire; T - "temporary": tires for temporary replacement.
215: width of tire in millimeter
65: Ratio of height to width
In the example, the width equal 55% height
R: Structure of tire
Normally tires are Radial structure corresponding to letter R. In addition, other characters such as B, D, or E, but it is very rare on the market.
15: Diameter of wheel in inches
95H: Load index and speed symbol
Number 95 corresponds to corresponding load which the tire can withstand. Usually this position is numbered from 75 to 105 equivalent loads from 380 to 925 kg. Besides the load index the letter is the maximum speed that the tire can operate normally, with the letter H, the tire will have a maximum speed equivalent: 210 km / h. The maximum speed can look in the table:
Symbol | Maximum speed (km/h) | Symbol | Maximum speed (km/h) |
F G J K L M N P | 80 90 100 110 120 130 140 150 | Q R S T U H V Z | 160 170 180 190 200 210 240 >240 |
Besides the main parameters, the tire has the following symbol:
Treadwear: The wear of a tire. Standard value is 100.
Traction: Measuring the ability traction of tire. From highest to lowest: AA, A, B, C.
Temperature: From highest to lowest: A, B, C.
M + S: This symbol ensures that tire can work on muddy or snow roads.
Maximum load: maximum load of tire (pounds or kilograms).
